Language Supports by Proficiency Level Descriptor

Each One Teach One

Pre-Production

Provide visual aids, diagrams, symbols, or gestures to support understanding of words, problems, or text. Break the topic into small, manageable parts and allow students to point, draw, or use single words while explaining ideas with a partner.

Beginning

Guide discussions with simple questions such as “What does this mean?” or “How can we explain this?” Provide sentence starters (e.g., “This means ___.”). Use graphic organizers such as a main idea and details chart to help students organize their explanation.

Intermediate

Encourage students to relate their topic to previously learned material or real-world examples. Provide sentence frames such as “This is important because ___.” or “This connects to ___.” Ask students to explain “why” or “how” when teaching their partner.

High Intermediate

Challenge students with higher-order questions such as “How does this concept apply to a new situation?” or “Why is this idea important?” Encourage students to explain their thinking using academic vocabulary and detailed examples.

Advanced

Ask students to synthesize ideas and clearly teach the concept to their partner using precise academic language. Encourage students to elaborate, answer follow-up questions, and extend the discussion with examples or connections.
