Language Supports by Proficiency Level Descriptor

Nine Squares

Pre-Production

Provide structured templates or word banks that include terms in the student’s home language. Offer simple stems such as “I see ___.” “I think this means ___.” or “This matters because ___.” Allow students to point, draw, or use short phrases when responding.

Beginning

Use guiding questions for each section such as Facts: “What do you see or read?” Inferences: “What does this fact suggest?” Conclusions: “Why is this important?” Provide a structured Nine Squares template with labeled sections to guide thinking.

Intermediate

During card trading, ask students to compare their reasoning for sorting choices and respectfully challenge each other’s ideas. Provide frames for more complex responses such as “This detail supports the idea that ___.” or “This inference suggests ___ because ___.”

High Intermediate

Ask students to analyze differences between similar facts or inferences and justify their sorting decisions. After sorting, have students write a short paragraph explaining how the facts, inferences, and conclusions connect to the main idea.

Advanced

Challenge students to synthesize information across multiple squares, evaluate the strength of their conclusions, and justify their reasoning using academic vocabulary and detailed explanations.
