Language Supports by Proficiency Level Descriptor

Mystery Sequence/Re-sequence

Pre-Production

Model the sequence using simplified language, gestures, and visuals. Provide labeled pictures or graphic organizers that represent each step so students can match or order them.

Beginning

Allow students to take quick notes in their home language before sequencing in English. Provide a “hint box” with key words or phrases students can use to explain the order.

Intermediate

Have students compare different possible sequences and justify their choices using sentence frames such as “This step comes first because ___.” Ask students to write or explain their reasoning.

High Intermediate

Challenge students to apply sequencing to a real-world scenario. Encourage groups to compare their sequences and explain why they ordered events differently.

Advanced

Ask students to evaluate and refine sequences by explaining cause-and-effect relationships. Encourage students to justify their reasoning using academic vocabulary and detailed explanations.
