Language Supports by Proficiency Level Descriptor

Tour of Knowledge

Pre-Production

Pair the student with a supportive peer who can model the station prompt. Encourage student to participate by matching visuals, pointing to ideas, or placing pre-printed word/picture cards instead of generating language.

Beginning

Pair with a peer who can help verbalize ideas. Pre-teach 2–3 key vocabulary words with pictures. Allow the student to copy a familiar phrase or add a labeled drawing to the poster.

Intermediate

Offer a short list of key terms, short phrases, or visuals related to the prompt. Provide a simple template for jotting ideas, facts, or connections before adding to the poster.

High Intermediate

Ask students to explain, connect, or extend ideas already on the poster using longer sentences and reasoning (e.g., “I believe this means…” “This connects to…”). Encourage them to ask clarifying questions or add a new layer of detail, evidence, or example.

Advanced

Pose open-ended prompts (e.g., “How does this idea relate to something we learned?” “What new perspective can we add?”). Encourage students to lead their group, organize ideas, and justify their contributions using content-area vocabulary and more complex sentences.
