Language Supports by Proficiency Level Descriptor

Play It – Say It

Pre-Production

Allow a partner to model how to justify their answer first so the student hears an example of the language. Use index cards with pictures, icons, gestures, or diagrams to represent terms, concepts, or steps. Allow students to respond with pointing, short phrases, or single words.

Beginning

Provide a simple organizer such as a T-chart where students can jot down their card choice and reason before speaking. Offer sentence starters such as “I chose ___.” or “This means ___.” Allow students to rehearse their response with a partner before sharing.

Intermediate

Provide sentence frames such as “I chose ___ because it relates to ___.” or “This answer is correct because ___.” Encourage the use of key vocabulary or academic terms related to the topic.

High Intermediate

Ask students to consider context, exceptions, or alternative interpretations when explaining their choice. After the round, have students summarize their reasoning and connect their card to the broader concept or lesson.

Advanced

Challenge students to defend their choice using evidence and academic vocabulary. Encourage students to compare responses, clarify reasoning, and extend the discussion by building on peers’ ideas.
