Pre-Production
Allow students to sort cards by color, image, or category before making matches. Use visuals, icons, or gestures to support understanding. Provide simple sentence stems such as “This matches because ___.” and allow students to respond using short phrases or pointing. |
Beginning
Provide sentence frames such as “I matched ___ with ___ because ___.” Offer a partially completed Matching Double Trouble template to guide student thinking. Allow students to rehearse explanations with a partner before sharing. |
Intermediate
Provide opportunities for students to explain connections in complete sentences verbally before writing. Encourage written justifications using transition words such as because, however, or for example. |
High Intermediate
Encourage students to explain subtle differences between similar terms or concepts. Ask students to create their own word, description, and visual cards for peers to match. |
Advanced
Challenge students to analyze relationships among terms, justify matches using evidence or reasoning, and explain nuanced differences using precise academic vocabulary. |
