Odd One Out

Pre-Production

Provide a word or picture sort before the activity so students can process vocabulary visually. Use labeled images, icons, or gestures and allow students to point or match items. Pair students with a supportive peer who can model responses.

Beginning

Provide graphic organizers to help students categorize similarities and differences. Encourage partner discussion before writing. Offer sentence starters such as “This one is different because ___.”

Intermediate

Ask students to explain their reasoning using complete sentences. Encourage students to consider multiple perspectives with prompts such as “Could someone choose a different answer?”

High Intermediate

Ask students to justify their choice using evidence and reasoning. Encourage small group discussions where students compare ideas and defend their responses.

Advanced

Challenge students to analyze relationships among the options, evaluate alternative answers, and justify their reasoning using academic vocabulary and detailed explanations.
