Language Supports by Proficiency Level Descriptor

Triad Trades

Pre-Production

Model how to answer each section using think-alouds, visuals, and gestures. Allow students to draw, point to visuals, or match key vocabulary to demonstrate understanding before responding verbally.

Beginning

Have students focus on one part of the task at a time rather than completing the entire handout at once. Encourage partner discussion before writing and provide simple sentence stems such as, “I think ___ because ___.”

Intermediate

Ask students to restate the assessment question in their own words before responding. Encourage complete sentences using familiar transition words (e.g., because, so, then).

High Intermediate

Ask students to explain and justify their thinking by citing evidence from the task or text. Encourage the use of a variety of transition words (e.g., therefore, however, for example, as a result) and more precise academic vocabulary.

Advanced

Challenge students to evaluate multiple interpretations of the question, defend their reasoning with relevant evidence, and refine explanations using precise academic language and discipline-specific vocabulary.
