Language Supports by Proficiency Level Descriptor

Real to Reel

Pre-Production

Allow students to plan their ideas in their home language before recording. Pair students with a bilingual or supportive partner and allow them to use visuals or gestures to help communicate their thinking.

Beginning

Use a T-chart (Old Thinking vs. New Thinking) to guide reflection. Encourage students to discuss their visuals and ideas with a partner before finalizing their response. Provide simple frames such as “I used to think ___.”

Intermediate

Encourage students to explain why key words, visuals, or examples are important to the concept. Provide a checklist to help students review clarity and completeness of their recording.

High Intermediate

Ask students to add a reflection or opinion such as “One interesting thing I noticed is ___ because ___.” Encourage students to connect their ideas to other concepts or experiences.

Advanced

Challenge students to evaluate how their thinking changed, explain the significance of the concept, and communicate their ideas clearly using precise academic language and detailed reasoning.
