Language Supports by Proficiency Level Descriptor

3-2-1 Summary

Pre-Production

Offer simple stems to guide responses such as “I learned ___.” or “An example is ___.” Use visuals, icons, or a bilingual word bank with key vocabulary. Allow students to point, gesture, or draw ideas before sharing verbally.

Beginning

Use guiding questions to help students recall learning (e.g., “What are three ideas you learned?” or “What are two examples of how this can be used?”). Provide a partially completed 3-2-1 template and sentence frames such as “One thing I learned is ___.”

Intermediate

Provide frames for more detailed responses such as “I learned ___, which is important because ___.” or “This can be applied by ___.” Encourage students to discuss their summaries with a partner and refine their explanations.

High Intermediate

Ask students to include multiple perspectives or interpretations in their examples and conclusions. Encourage connections to broader concepts or real-world situations with prompts such as “How does this idea connect to ___?”

Advanced

Challenge students to synthesize their learning, explain why the ideas are significant, and apply the concept to a new situation or problem using precise academic language.
