Language Supports by Proficiency Level Descriptor

Catch and Release

Pre-Production

Use gestures, pointing, visuals, or physical objects to reinforce key concepts. Allow students to act out key vocabulary or concepts before explaining their meaning.

Beginning

Provide sentence frames for each round such as “This question is asking me to ___.” or “An important word here is ___ because ___.” Allow students to discuss responses with a partner before sharing with the group.

Intermediate

Ask students to explain the relationship between the process and the content of the question. Encourage students to explain why a distractor answer is incorrect using academic vocabulary.

High Intermediate

Assign advanced students as peer mentors to model structured explanations. Extend the activity by asking students to create their own distractor answer and explain why it could be misleading.

Advanced

Challenge students to analyze question design, evaluate distractor effectiveness, and explain strategies for identifying correct answers using precise academic language and reasoning.
