Language Supports by Proficiency Level Descriptor

Fixer Upper

Pre-Production

Provide images, diagrams, and dual-language word banks to support comprehension of the question. Offer simple sentence stems such as “This question is about ___.” or “The important word is ___.”

Beginning

Model how to analyze mistakes before students work in pairs. Allow students to focus on one section of the Fixer Upper at a time instead of completing the entire template at once.

Intermediate

Encourage students to justify corrections using sentence frames such as “I originally thought ___, but now I realize ___.” or “I can correct this mistake by ___.”

High Intermediate

Ask students to analyze why mistakes occurred and create their own “tricky” multiple-choice questions based on common misconceptions.

Advanced

Challenge students to evaluate incorrect responses, explain why they may seem correct, and design improved questions that better assess the concept using precise academic language.
