Language Supports by Proficiency Level Descriptor

Idea Shuffle

Pre-Production

Allow students to draw, point to visuals, or use labeled diagrams to support their response. Encourage oral responses before writing and allow the use of speech-to-text when available.

Beginning

Encourage peer discussion before rating responses to support language processing. Provide sentence starters such as “I think this is a ___ response.” Use a simplified rubric with visuals to clarify expectations.

Intermediate

Encourage full-sentence responses with justification. Introduce transition words such as because, also, however, or for example to support explanation.

High Intermediate

Require students to organize responses using a clear structure (e.g., introduction, explanation, conclusion). Ask students to justify their rating using precise language and examples.

Advanced

Challenge students to evaluate multiple responses, defend their ratings using evidence, and refine explanations using academic vocabulary and complex sentence structures.
