Pre-Production
Provide visual support by pairing vocabulary, text excerpts, or answer choices with pictures, icons, or gestures. Allow students to demonstrate understanding by pointing, matching visuals, or acting out ideas with a partner. |
Beginning
Offer word banks with simple sentence stems (e.g., “This is a ___ because ___.”). Pair with a supportive peer and allow students to practice responses before sharing. Encourage short verbal responses using key vocabulary. |
Intermediate
Introduce academic vocabulary and provide a list of key terms (e.g., justify, predict, describe). Allow students to rehearse responses with a partner and use sentence frames to explain their thinking. Students may switch roles after the first round. |
High Intermediate
Encourage students to connect ideas and explain relationships between concepts. Use higher-order prompts such as “How does this relate to what we learned before?” or “What might happen if we change ___?” |
Advanced
Students explain, justify, and extend ideas using academic vocabulary and complete explanations. Encourage students to compare perspectives, make predictions, and support responses with reasoning or evidence. |
