Pre-Production
Pair with a supportive peer who can model responses. Use visuals, bilingual word banks, and simple sentence stems (e.g., “The correct answer is ___.”). Allow students to respond with gestures, pointing, or short phrases. |
Beginning
Provide additional processing time before forming a line or choosing a response. Offer word banks with familiar words, synonyms, or cognates to support vocabulary development. Encourage short verbal responses. |
Intermediate
Encourage peer coaching by prompting students to ask, “Why do you think that?” Provide sentence frames for explaining reasoning before students move to a new partner. |
High Intermediate
Encourage synthesis with prompts such as “How does this connect to what we learned before?” Ask students to compare responses with their partner and discuss similarities or differences. |
Advanced
Students explain and defend their thinking using academic vocabulary and complete explanations. Encourage students to extend conversations by questioning, clarifying, or refining their partner’s ideas. |
