Pair – Square – Share

Pre-Production

Provide visuals and a list of key vocabulary with definitions or translations. Allow students to rehearse responses with their partner and respond using gestures, pointing, or short phrases.

 

Beginning

Provide graphic organizers or sentence frames such as “The main idea is ___ because ___.” Encourage students to practice short explanations with their partner before sharing with the group.

 

Intermediate

Encourage more detailed responses using prompts such as “Why do you think that?” or “What evidence supports your answer?” Ask students to compare similarities or differences in their ideas when working with another pair.

 

High Intermediate

Ask students to combine ideas from their square into a refined or unified response. Encourage the use of academic vocabulary and more complex sentence structures when explaining their thinking.

 

Advanced

Challenge students to extend the discussion by evaluating multiple perspectives, clarifying reasoning, and building on others’ ideas using academic language and complete explanations.
