Think and Throw

Pre-Production

Pair students with a supportive peer who can help model or articulate responses. Provide visuals and simple sentence stems such as “This response is good because ___.” or “I think this because ___.” Allow students to respond with short phrases, gestures, or highlighted text.

Beginning

Chunk the text when reading passages. Highlight key sentences or provide a shortened version to support comprehension. Allow students to collaborate with a partner and rehearse responses before writing or sharing.

Intermediate

Encourage students to review their responses using a checklist with questions such as “Did I answer the question?” or “Did I explain my thinking?” Encourage students to elaborate on their responses using sentence frames and academic vocabulary.

High Intermediate

Encourage students to expand their responses by adding evidence, examples, or explanations. Provide opportunities for peer feedback where students help refine or extend each other’s ideas.

Advanced

Challenge students to evaluate responses, justify their reasoning with evidence, and refine their thinking using precise academic vocabulary and more complex explanations.
