Provide images, icons, or labeled visuals inside the box to help students recognize key facts. Highlight important words using colors or symbols. Allow students to point, gesture, or draw to show their thinking before sharing verbally.

Encourage students to discuss ideas with a partner before writing to build confidence. Pair students with a more proficient peer for structured conversation and provide simple sentence stems such as “This detail shows ___.”

Allow students to compare their facts and inferences with a partner before finalizing responses. Encourage students to explain their reasoning verbally before writing to refine their thinking.

Have students reflect through journaling prompts such as “How did thinking inside the box help you identify important details?” or “How does this strategy help improve comprehension?” Encourage students to explain their reasoning using academic vocabulary.

Challenge students to evaluate how the strategy helps distinguish key ideas from supporting details and apply the approach to a new text or concept while explaining their reasoning.
