Language Supports by Proficiency Level Descriptor

Three’s a Crowd

Pre-Production

Use gestures, pointing, visuals, or physical objects to reinforce understanding. Provide pre-made categories or labeled visuals students can use to identify connections among the images.

Beginning

Provide a partially completed Three’s a Crowd template as a guide. Allow students to match pre-written connections to visuals and rehearse explanations with a partner before sharing.

Intermediate

Encourage students to explain their reasoning using complete sentences. Provide prompts such as “These connect because ___.” or “This one is different because ___.” Introduce higher-order questions such as “What would happen if we replaced another visual?”

High Intermediate

Extend the activity by requiring students to write a paragraph explaining how the three visuals are connected. Encourage students to justify their reasoning using evidence or examples.

Advanced

Challenge students to analyze relationships among the visuals, evaluate alternative interpretations, and justify their reasoning using precise academic vocabulary and complex explanations.
