Pre-Production
Model how to answer each section using think-alouds, visuals, and gestures. Allow students to draw, point to visuals, or match key vocabulary to demonstrate understanding before responding verbally. |
Beginning
Have students focus on one part of the task at a time rather than completing the entire handout at once. Encourage partner discussion before writing and provide simple sentence stems such as, “I think ___ because ___.” |
Intermediate
Ask students to restate the assessment question in their own words before responding. Encourage complete sentences using familiar transition words (e.g., because, so, then). |
High Intermediate
Ask students to explain and justify their thinking by citing evidence from the task or text. Encourage the use of a variety of transition words (e.g., therefore, however, for example, as a result) and more precise academic vocabulary. |
Advanced
Challenge students to evaluate multiple interpretations of the question, defend their reasoning with relevant evidence, and refine explanations using precise academic language and discipline-specific vocabulary. |
