Language Supports by Proficiency Level Descriptor

Yes, No, Maybe So

Pre-Production

Provide sentence stems such as “This is yes because ___.”, “This is no because ___.”, or “This is maybe because ___.” Use visuals, icons, and key vocabulary to support comprehension. Allow students to gesture, point, or draw before sharing verbally.

Beginning

Use prompts such as “Why could this be correct or incorrect?” or “What evidence supports this?” Provide a Yes–No–Maybe So organizer where students record the answer choice, their decision, and a simple justification.

Intermediate

Provide frames such as “I believe this is ___ because ___.” or “The mistake in this answer is ___ because ___.” Encourage students to support their reasoning with textual, visual, or numerical evidence when possible.

High Intermediate

Ask students to analyze multiple pieces of evidence or consider nuances in the question and answer choices. After group discussion, have students explain how their reasoning developed or changed.

Advanced

Challenge students to evaluate competing interpretations, defend their decisions using strong evidence, and explain how different perspectives might influence the answer choice.
