Rock and Roll Item Review

Pre-Production

Model answering the prompt using gestures, visuals, and simple explanations. Provide sentence starters with fill-in-the-blank options such as “The big idea is ___.” or “The visual shows ___.” Allow students to point or use short phrases before responding verbally.

Beginning

Have students focus on one part of the prompt at a time rather than responding to all prompts at once. Encourage partner or small-group discussion before students respond independently.

Intermediate

Ask students to explain why distractors are incorrect and justify their reasoning using complete sentences. Provide frames such as “The distractor is ___ because ___, but the correct answer is ___ because ___.”

High Intermediate

Have students reflect on patterns in their thinking by journaling responses to prompts such as “What mistakes do I notice?” or “What strategies help me avoid distractors?” Encourage students to modify prompts or extend the activity.

Advanced

Challenge students to analyze the quality of answer choices, explain why distractors are convincing, and design improved questions that require deeper reasoning and precise academic language.
