Pre-Production
Include pictures, labeled visuals, gestures, or physical objects in the mystery bag to support understanding. Allow students to point, match visuals, or choose between possible answers before explaining an item. |
Beginning
Provide sentence frames or a mini whiteboard for students to sketch ideas before speaking. Use simple stems such as “I think this is ___.” or “This might be ___ because ___.” |
Intermediate
Ask students to identify patterns and make predictions based on the items in the bag. Encourage students to jot down 2–3 key ideas before presenting their explanation. |
High Intermediate
Ask students to explain their reasoning and connect ideas to prior learning. After discussion, have students summarize their thinking through a written response, short explanation, or quick video. |
Advanced
Challenge students to analyze relationships among the items and justify their predictions using evidence. Encourage students to extend the discussion by comparing interpretations and explaining their reasoning using academic vocabulary. |
