Pre-Production
Provide sentence strips or visuals with key ideas so students can select important information rather than writing from scratch. Highlight key sentences or phrases from the passage to guide summary development. |
Beginning
Allow students to write the six summary cards collaboratively, with each student responsible for at least one idea. Encourage discussion with a partner before writing individual summaries. |
Intermediate
Ask students to justify their chosen summary ideas using textual evidence. Provide prompts such as “Why is this one of the most important ideas?” or “How does this detail support the main idea?” |
High Intermediate
Ask students to evaluate summaries by comparing their six cards with another group’s choices. Encourage reflection with questions such as “What makes a strong summary?” or “Did we leave out any key ideas?” |
Advanced
Challenge students to refine summaries by synthesizing ideas, prioritizing the most important details, and explaining how their summary captures the central idea of the text using precise academic language. |
