Pre-Production
Teacher models a full round using think-alouds and visuals. Allow students to circle key words, point to visuals, or draw connections before responding. Reduce the number of rounds if needed to support participation. |
Beginning
Allow students to focus on one part of the question at a time rather than completing all rounds at once. Provide sentence stems such as “The important word is ___.” or “I think the answer is ___ because ___.” |
Intermediate
Ask students to rewrite the question in a different format (for example, converting it into a short-response question). Encourage think-pair-share discussions before students write their responses. |
High Intermediate
Encourage self-correction by asking prompts such as “Would you change your answer if you saw ___?” Have students reflect on how their thinking changed and what strategies helped them improve their answer. |
Advanced
Challenge students to analyze question design, explain why certain answers are stronger than others, and create new questions that require deeper reasoning and precise academic language. |
