Toss a Question

Pre-Production

Teacher models a full round using think-alouds and visuals. Allow students to circle key words, point to visuals, or draw connections before responding. Reduce the number of rounds if needed to support participation.

Beginning

Allow students to focus on one part of the question at a time rather than completing all rounds at once. Provide sentence stems such as “The important word is ___.” or “I think the answer is ___ because ___.”

Intermediate

Ask students to rewrite the question in a different format (for example, converting it into a short-response question). Encourage think-pair-share discussions before students write their responses.

High Intermediate

Encourage self-correction by asking prompts such as “Would you change your answer if you saw ___?” Have students reflect on how their thinking changed and what strategies helped them improve their answer.

Advanced

Challenge students to analyze question design, explain why certain answers are stronger than others, and create new questions that require deeper reasoning and precise academic language.
