How to Use this Book

Kids are bold. They try things. They look at the world with fresh eyes. They imagine the world as it could be. They make use of what they have to create and build. Being bold isn’t about being loud (although it can be). Being bold is about finding what you love and doing it well. It is about taking risks and making mistakes and laughing through it all. It is about finding the people who can be bold with you.

When I started writing this book, I thought about the kids in my life, my family, the kids I taught, the kids at my school when I was a principal, my friends’ kids, and the kids I see everywhere. Each one was bold in his or her own way. They are bold, not because of what they do or the grades they make, but because of who they are. Bold kids will change the world.

In sharing this book or creating one of your own with your students, we offer these suggestions:

As a read-aloud:

  • Read the be bold book to your kids
  • What does it mean to be bold?
  • Brainstorm how each one of us is bold in our own way

Make your own be bold book or be bold page:

  • Download the template
  • Have student choose a page that is like them
  • Or … choose the blank page to create their own
  • Illustrate the page and the frame
  • Sort the pages – How are we alike? – How are we different?
  • Read the new book

At back-to-school night or parent-teacher conferences:

  • Display on desks and have kids share with their parents
  • Start a parent-teacher conference with the child’s be bold page

At holiday time or another special occasion, consider making your own be bold book as outlined above and giving to students as a gift:

  • Follow the steps above to create your own be bold book for students
  • Optional: have other students write one bold thing for each other on their pages
  • Give the final teacher-created (optional student-created) be bold book as a gift to each student – signed by you (their teacher)
